Things to do
There are a number of different types and styles of golf course, all within
an hour of Sens sur Seille. Here are just a few:
There is a 9 hole course, situated just 15kms from us at Chapelle Voland
(tel: 03 84 44 10 57). You can hire equipment on site. Green fees are
12 euros 20 during the week, and 15 euros 24 at weekends and on national
holidays. The course is open all year round.
For something more challenging, situated just outside Lons le Saunier
(about a 30 minute drive) is a par 72 championship course at the Domaine
du Val de Sorne Golf Hotel (tel: 03 84 43 04 80). Green fees here range
from 29 euros to 47 euros, depending on the time of the year and the day
of the week.
Just outside Chalon sur Saone is the Parc de Loisirs Saint-Nicolas which
has a very good municipal course which is an 18 hole par 71 course. For
more information try their website on www.golf-chalon-sur-saone.com.
There is a wide variety of fishing available in the area. You can catch
Pike, Black Bass, Perch, Carp and the famous Silurid on the rivers Seille,
Doubs and the Saone. There are also a large number of well stocked private
ponds that offer day and night fishing.
There is a swimming pool that is open from 2pm each day during the summer
at Saint Germain du Bois, which is approximately 10 minutes from Sens
sur Seille.
Situated at Bosjean, just 3 miles from us, is the Centre Hippique de La
Cheneraie, a major equitation centre run by the Vincent family. It hosts
competitions and events throughout the whole year. You can enrole for
courses or lessons, or we can arrange for an early morning/evening hack.
The Bresse countryside is gently rolling and is well suited to those who
enjoy a gentle, not too taxing promenade en bicyclette. For those with
a little or a lot more energy, the Jura mountains are a relatively short
drive away, and offer a whole range of mountain bike type activities.
In the westerly direction lies the award winning "Voie Verte" or Green
Way. This is a series of routes for cycling, walking, horse riding or
even roller blading, that runs across Saone et Loire. These routes are
generally easy riding but can cover long distances, and either follow
the Saone river or wander through the vinyards. The Voie Verte is completely
traffic free, but there are a good number of carparks with information
and usually, toilets, where you can leave the car and join the route.
If you don't want to bring your own bikes with you, we have 4 mountain
bikes available for guests' use, suitable for around age 11 upwards to
adult. Or, there is a bicycle hire scheme at Louhans, based at the Tourist
Office, and prices start from 9euros for half a day.
We also have a bike rack for the car, which you may borrow!
Things to do and Places to go! (within 20 minutes drive)
The village itself is a working village with many 'entreprises', but the
church in the centre of the village is well worth a stroll and a look.
Plus, a wander across la prarie towards Frangy en Bresse gives you a great
opportunity to see some of the local flora and fauna, including red squirrels,
woodpeckers, roe deer - you may even spot one of the famous "Silureads"
in the river!
Thriving market on a Saturday morning which is well worth a visit. There
is a large lake with walks and the swimming pool, which is open during
the summer months. Le Maison Collinet hosts the museum of agricultural
life in the Bresse region dating from the early 19th century. Not far
from Saint Germain is Mervans, which is a member of the 'Twisted Towers
of Europe', for its stunning church spire, covered in Burgundian tiles
and twisted like barleysugar!
Louhans is famous for it's arched shopping arcades dating back to the
middle ages. It also has a very impressive Hotel Dieu and Apothecary.
Louhan's market on a Monday morning has to be seen to be believed, covering
virtually the whole of the town! Louhans also has the Printing Museum
which forms part of the Ecomusee de Bresse Bourguignon, and shows the
history of how a newspaper was created.
The Chateau at Pierre de Bresse (see a photograph here)
is certainly one of the most spectacular in the region and hosts the Eco
musee de Bresse Bourguignon, with exhibits on the life of the Bresse region
through the ages and gives an insight into the economic life of the region
then and now. The Chateau also hosts a variety of festivals and events
throughout the year.
Just over the border into the Jura region is the lovely mediaeval village
of Arlay. You can picnic by the river, stroll through the village and
admire the architecture or visit the Chateau. This is now mostly ruined,
but still magnificent. Arlay is one of the wine villages of the Cotes
du Jura
This is the start of the Jura wine region and the Route du Vins du Jura.
I'Etoile has some interesting wine producers to visit who produce white
and sparkling Jura wines. Why not try a taste?
Things to do and Places to go! (within 1 hours drive)
On the banks of the mighty river Saone, a mixture of old medieval town
and newer areas. The old town hosts the Sunday market. There are several
museums - Le Musee Nicephore Niepce dedicated to one of the pioneers of
photography. Le Musee Denon is situated in an old convent and has sections
on the archaeology of the region, plus roman and bronze age exhibits,
and paintings and furniture of the region from the 16th, 17th and 18th
centuries. L'Hopital Saint-Laurent is situated on the Ile Saint-Laurent
and was founded by nuns in 1528. It is also close to the "restaurant quarter"
where you will find a large range of cafes and restaurants to suit all
tastes and pockets.
As well as being one of the main "book capitals" in France with regular
festivals and fairs (usually the first Sunday in every month) as well
as permanent book shops and printers, engravers, illustrators and so on,
Cuisery also offers the Centre Eden. This modern multimedia centre explores
the ecology of the region through the elements of earth, fire, air and
water.
Beautiful mediaeval walled town and the heart of the Burgundy wine region.
Home to some of the regions most famous wine houses. The Hotel-Dieu with
its stunning burgundian tiled roofs and outstanding history. Superb street
market on Saturdays. You can arrange to go on 'wine safaris' to visit
the vineyards and taste the wines with the people who actually make them.
Pretty spa town in the Jura region offering a variety of different places
of interest including Juraparc which hosts regular exhibitions. Not far
from Lons is the 'Lake District' and the spectacular Cascades du Herisson
system of waterfalls. Lons is also a good starting place for the Jura
Wine Trail, following small roads through the pretty wine making villages
of the Jura region.
This picturesque village just the other side of Lons le Saunier, is quite
unexpected, and is dominated by the Abbey, parts of which date back to
the 12th Century. It also has a marvellous set of caves at the upper end
of the valley, where you can take guided tours of the fascinating rock
formations.
